about

Inspired by the Herman Hesse novel, Gertrude which was first published in 1910, I wanted to capture the beautiful, frivolous, transient and ultimately tragic nature of the character Gertrude. This composition is, in essence, a pentatonic melody written over the structure of the blues and accompanied by a bass line that reflects the character Kuhn’s stability and unrequited love of Gertrude through the seriousness and predictability of the Habanera.
